Organizations are learning what is most important in managing social media- namely, being agile enough to take an opportunity and use it to respond and engage with customers online and make social media valuable.

[box]Social media is rapidly transforming the way organizations communicate with customers. As a cost-effective way to engage online, social media gives companies broader reach beyond traditional communication methods like email. With a simple post or tweet, businesses can promote products and services, provide instant feedback or support, creating an online community of brand enthusiasts. Staying competitive in today’s fast moving business landscape requires a solid social media strategy.[/box]

The online landscape is more transactional than ever before. As communicators, we have to focus on engagement and what customers do with our products or services. This emerging conversation is facilitated through social media tools- however the tools themselves don’t do your job for you.

“Hitting send on a tweet, or posting a status update on Facebook isn’t the same as doing your job.”- Mike Toner

If you’re not on social media then you’re ignoring where your best customers spend one-third of the day.

Below is an great infographic which illustrates the WHY, the HOW and the WHO of social media.

WHY should we interact with potential customers on social media?

HOW does social media integrate with your businesses communication strategy?

WHO is already integrating social media as part of their overall business objectives?

Strategies like Search Engine Optimization target customers at the moment they want to buy. Through analytics, marketers can accurately track where customers come from, how long they stay on a site, what campaigns bring in the most sales and more. Marketing is making the move towards SEO

SEO is Measureable:

Tracking the effectiveness of marketing dollars has always been the hard job of advertising and marketing departments.

It’s difficult to track how billboards, print ads and TV commercials bring in customers, and if sales are a direct result of traditional marketing campaigns- “what’s the ROI?”

It makes sense that marketers would move towards SEO and search volume/analytics on keywords. Whether it’s PPC, SEO, Social Media, or Conversion Optimization, through analytics, you can track how a particular campaign directly influences website traffic, leads, and sales. Everyone involved can see the statistics and can change plans to
improve performance.

SEO is Targeted:

Every month, there are 14 billion online searches. Many of those searches are for products and services.

Each industry has keywords that are searched on thousands of times.

Top rankings in the search engine results has the potential to capture a massive demographic that is looking to buy specific products.

As reported in Cornell University’s Eye Tracking study- 56% of searchers click on the 1st search result.

A big difference between traditional marketing/advertising and digital, is search marketing directly hones in on a demographic of customers who are looking to buy a specific product.
While traditional reaches a vast, ambiguous audience, search marketing reaches the right customers at the exact moment they want to buy. Traditional marketing is like blindly casting a wide net.

SEO as Strategy

Good search marketing campaigns achieve a balance between SEO, Paid Advertising, Social Media, and conversion strategies that drive website traffic and turn that traffic into sales. When each of those strategies blend together perfectly, website revenue increases dramatically.

From Jan 6- Jan 9, 2011 I will be attending the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow.

The International Consumer Electronic Show draws more than 120,000 attendees with the exhibit space covering more than 1.5 million square feet of the Las Vegas Convention center.

When I first attended CES in 2009 Netbooks were just making their big splash and the big debate was LCD vs Plasma. Their were no Droids, no Tablets and most certainly no 3-D tv’s.

Here’s a quick look at the products that have debuted at CES over the past 20 years:

I am not overly excited about the possibility of tablet computers being the highlight of CES 2011. I already know that Apple will not be exhibiting at the show- (Apple never goes to CES) and the ipad will most likely continue to dominate the market for some time, especially with the prospect of an iPad 2 in the coming months.

It’s hard to tell what will catch my attention this year. I hope to see some amazing 3-D TV’s although I think the manufacturers still need to find a reason to make me WANT a 3-D TV…as I already know that I don’t need it! I also don’t want to wear those stupid glasses.

Here’s a little video from my time out at the 2009 Consumer Electronic Show:

And here are few thoughts on what to expect at CES 2011:

http://mobilelocalsocial.com/2010/what-to-expect-at-ces-2011/

The web is progressing, it is learning.

Images, music, maps, are only a part of how we experience the web today. These elements are the start of Augmented Reality which uses maps and images to orient the web user to a virtual reality.

Location based social networks like FourSquare, are all the rage right now. This makes sense in the order of things right?right?Geography is about everything that is (literally) close to us, and it’s a universally familiar method of organizing, finding and tracking relevant information on objects, events and people.

First we make friends, then we share.

The one-way-web turned into the Social Web and now Google Instant gives us the Instantly Social, Geographically Oriented, Personable, Smart Web.

The fundamentals are the same. It’s still the Google algorihtm- it’s just smarter- it knows YOU, displaying results in a different way. Relying on your personal search history as a key factor in Google’s quest to deliver a quality search experience which means: PERSONALIZED search results.

Moving forward, Google results will be a reflection of your involvement and patterns on the web- using more than the WORDS themselves to determine the context of your search, more or less- deciphering your intent in searching. i.e. Have you been to this website before? Have you researched other similar sites?

By providing this immediate feedback -Google is changing the WAY we search, and eventually our collective search behavior will change… SEO is now dependent on more than keywords, content must meet new factors related to user relevancy and intent…

Social media took a wild ride last year as businesses and organization began accepting it as a serious business tool.

Tonight, I am speaking to a group of business students at Howard University who are dedicated users of web 2.0 but are looking to be the next ‘gatejumper’ in the world wide web. I plan to talk about Reputation Management online AND the human aspect of becoming a web aficionado. The first point will detail ways you can build online influence using the internet.

“The Internet has leveled the playing field for media, merchandise, communication, location and many other areas.” – Trust Agents

My second point will talk about how involvement in social media will inevitably lead to the risk of “one-way intimacy”- when you are simply pushing your message out to an audience. The important point here is that brands earn our attention through personal intimacy, we must maintain that human touch. We all recognize that companies need to change and begin participating- your job is to find out how to make twitter valuable for your employer or for your own business.

Here is the secret, tie in social media to the overall business goals, not just web-related goals. Track leads and sales from social networking to understands the true impact.

Listen Listen Listen

Lastly and most importantly, don’t focus so much on you and your message. Figure out how you can help FIRST then speak up.

For those who think facebook is the extent of your online persona – think again. We are entering a new era and those migrating into social networks are quickly learning how to communicate online.

I like the idea that we are collectively learning and brainstorming how to use social media. Do you think it is a learned skill…?

In Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations, Clay Shirky discusses the mass amateurization that comes with social media and what “happens when people are given the tools to do things together, without needing traditional organizational structures.”

So, are you ready to dive in?

S is for Social

Social Media has given individuals an online platform to facilitate the sharing of information. We share ideas, songs, powerpoints- you name it, you can find opinions and ideas about that topic online and this information is now within your social network.

O is for Openness

The social web encourages transparency. There is no way to hide what you say online, everything is searchable and archived. The Freedom of Information age is upon us.

U is for Ubiquitos

Access will be mobile, allowing for constant interacting among individuals through virtual, online portals.

P is for Privacy

The internet and the information being gathered by google, facebook, linkedin, gist and twitter is a gold mine for marketers who want to anticipate our next move and find creative uses of GPS enabled location-tracking devices, like cell phones. When and where I’ll be hungry is a great place for a sidewalk lunch-special sign, isnt it?

What does all this lead to?

Well, it leads to the to optimization of the optimizer or a place where machines can analyze all the data on the Web, and computers behave like personal assistants and ultimately can respond to my questions and recommend my likes and dislikes based upon our prior behavior.

What is your next move online?

The blending of real world networking and online social networking can be the difference between getting your first interview and getting your first job.

College students about to enter the workforce during these weak economic times have an opportunity to control what their potential employers will know and need to know about them- at least more than a paper resume could ever show. It wasn’t so long ago that I was applying for my job and I relied predominately on a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 1/2 piece of paper.

I crammed as much text as possible onto that resume. My reputation lay in the hands of the information I presented here and maybe the three individuals I list at the bottom as references.

If Barrack Obama taught us anything over the course of his campaign it was how influential an online resume can be. He built an online network unlike any other and used it to supplement his traditional campaign.

In the end, he used social media to get the job, so-to-speak.

The blending of real world networking and online social networking can be the difference between getting your first interview and getting your first job.

For the seniors in college, I encourage you to think about hard your facebook profile and yes, delete pictures that put your reputation in question. Share your life online, share your experiences, but share wisely.

Your employers will google you.

Those results are your new resume.

I had a great time out in Vegas. It was my first trip to SinCity and to be honest, it was an easy test of my self-control. I played craps for about an hour and stayed clear of the slot machines. In old Vegas, I did play $5 blackjack, but all in all, I’ve still got my dignity AND my money.

In the video, the little netbook is from iRiver. The e-cigarette doesn’t have any nicotine nor a flame. It runs on a battery and is more or less a heated concoction of flavored steam. The Segway-table is an interesting use of an existing technology.

Pleo, the robotic baby dinosaur was a little too life like, but would make some kid really happy.

The coolest thing I saw didn’t make the video, mostly ’cause I met the guy on the monarail. This guy was wearing a flashlight looking thing on his belt and his T-shirt said something like, “As I walk, I’m charging my cell phone.” Essentially, the flashlight holster was a battery charger, called nPower PEG. It relies on the frequency movement you generate while walking to store the energy and charge whatever you want via a USB port.

Imagine harnessing wave energy with buoys placed out in the ocean. It can work to store and re-purpose the extra energy being produced just about anywhere. Very cool.

I believe that every conversation with a potential customer is a representation of the larger organization; you are now acting as the company. In the same way, every performance for a stage actor is a representation of the way the playwright intended the script to be performed, mostly a larger depiction of reality.

Now lets take customer service as a new character role:

Service Provider: Not always seen as a hero, SP is the complicated antagonist of the play. After generations of observing good service he or she uses their experience, along with the desire to help to increase the position as a service provider. He or she is often forced to depend on the kindness of their customers.

On the flip side, it’s often difficult to recognize good customer service and even harder to BE A good customer. Yes, that’s right, as the customer you must be willing to listen and be receptive to the service offered to you.

Customer: Often not ready for a new process or sequence and can be easily caught off guard. During his or her ‘demanding moments,’ customer is at their worst. In contrast, the quieter times seem good and this leading character will willingly engage in an interchange of questions and answers with SP.

As an audience member, there are certain rules or etiquettes that should be followed by all parties involved. As with theatre, there is an expectation that the show will be professional.

Do you recognize good customer service? Moreover, are you good at being a customer?

What characteristics does each portray?

As I headed to the Kennedy Center last night for a show, I began thinking about the preparation involved in stage production and what an immense undertaking it is. The behind the scenes work takes months to produce a seemingly effortless result; the performance.

I was always taught that the trick to acting is to make each performance seem like the first time. To make each word and motion authentic to the moment, current and un-contrived.

I believe the same idea applies to real life and to business, especially from a customer service standpoint. Each interaction with a customer or client should feel real, not a canned corporate answer and definitely should not sound like a rehearsed script.

No matter the interaction, act as though you are the only personal contact that the customer has with your company. Be prepared and behave as though the entire company’s image depends on you.

More on this tomorrow…
